Program:
Lion Jerry Reamer introduced
Grace Scullin and her dog “Balto”. Grace gave us a very informational
program on “Leader Dogs for the Blind”. Balto is Grace’s 7th
leader dog that she has owned. Leader Dog was founded in 1939 in Rochester,
Michigan. The dogs go through 4months of training (26 days of training
with the students). 55% of the dogs don’t make it as a Leader Dog.
They are not destroyed but get a job in drug enforcement or even as
a pet. The students during their 26 days of training are housed, fed
and taken care of by a house mother. It takes about 6months to a year
to become proficient as a Team. Grace also talked about “Tracker”
a GPS for a blind person. This does not replace the dog but helps in
conjunction with the dog and the “Tracker”. It costs $40,000 to
put a Leader Dog team together.
Lion John Wing makes motion to adjourn-motion carried.

Cupboard in Jerry & Alyce’s name, Neil seconds the motion, carried.
The club will also present a plaque to Jerry on November 15th
(Jerry’s last meeting before moving). The plaque expense will be taken
out of supplies.
Lion Karl has volunteered to
be the Champion of Leader Dogs. Karl will look into what is involved
to sponsor a pup. Lion Karl makes a motion to give a donation of $250.00
for “Leader Dogs for the Blind”. Lion Bob Gregory seconds the motion,
carried. Lion Karl will remind the Club about putting this in next year’s
budget so that a donation is made yearly.
Lion Bob Gregory asked how
we got Grace Scullin to visit? Does the Irondequoit Club help her with
expenses? Need to get the answers.
Discussion about a Program
Chair. Lion Neil suggested asking a veteran if they would be willing
to speak at our Club. He will look into this. Another suggestion was
asking if an exchange student would be interested in speaking at our
Club. Might be able to contact Ed Gaesser, he is head of AFS. Dean &
Jeanne Brightly on Redman Road have an exchange student right now-may
be able to speak sometime in March.
Christmas Party-tentative date
